Sky West & Crooked

by Caitlin Grey

/
1.
The lyrics are taken from a poem by William Butler Yeats. Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet; She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet. She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree; But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree. In a field by the river my love and I did stand, And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand. She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs; But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

Over the hills we go Come away me laddie-o Over the hills today Come away me laddie stay On the sky west & crooked path That leads you down to the sea Over the hills we go Come away me laddie-o Come away me laddie-o And we're sky west & crooked Over the hills we go On the sky west & crooked path Come away me laddie-o Come away me laddie-o Run with me lassie run Through the forest to the sea Run with me lassie run To a land where we'll be free And we'll live wild & reckless No slave, nor servant be Run with me lassie run To a land where we'll be free To a land where we'll be free And we're sky west & crooked Over the hills we go On the sky west & crooked path Come away me laddie-o Come away me laddie-o

A blacksmith courted me Nine months and better He fairly won my heart Wrote me a letter With his hammer in his hand He looked quite clever And if I was with my love I'd live forever Oh, where has my love gone? With his cheeks like roses And his good lack billycock on Decked with primroses I fear the burning sun Shall shine and mar his beauty And if I was with my love I'd do my duty Strange news has come to town Strange news is carried Strange news flies up and down That my love is married I wish them both great joy 'Though they cannot hear me And may God reward them well For the slighting of me
